For Historians
We have recently had the good fortune to have access to some very rare artefacts located in Scotland from around the world that are of great historical interest and we can arrange for our clients to have private and exclusive viewings of the following;
For Chinese guests, we can can show them various artefacts and textiles collected in China in the nineteenth century, including wine jars given as a personal gift to the 8th Earl of Elgin by Prince Gong, brother of the Xianfeng Emperor. We also have a set of watercolours painted by British artists in China in 1858.
For Greek guests we can show a collection of architectural fragments dating from 4th century BC, collected in Athens, together with measured drawings of the figures of the Parthenon Frieze, made by the British medal maker, John Henning. These are very unusual and unique. We have original manuscript letters, correspondence, diaries, day books etc which tell the entire story of the archaeology carried out in the Ottoman Empire in the early nineteenth century by the 7th Earl of Elgin, - and the reception given to his collection of Greek sculpture by artists such as Turner, in London. These papers explain the huge impact which the collection made on contemporary taste, igniting the Greek revival in architecture and decorative arts. These papers are studied at Broomhall by Greek archaeologists, on a regular basis.
For Indian guests, we have an extensive collection of textiles dating from 1890's - principally suzanis and carpets. We also have access to one of the best collections of photographs of nineteenth century India, taken in 1862/3 and 1894/9. Two Lord Elgins (8th and 9th Earls) served as Viceroy and their papers, stored in the archive at Broomhall, cover important events such as: 1857 Indian Uprising and British attempts at reconciliation, construction of railways (9th Earl built 4,000 miles), campaigns on the North West Frontier (captured arms and armour), and measures to combat famine and plague. The 9th Earl was faced by the worst famine in the 19th century but organised a system of relief that fed 33 million people. The legislation which he passed in 1897 to deal with outbreaks of plague is still active! He traveled all over India with his family. We have many silver caskets and gifts which he received from Princes and city municipalities. "
